Predicting the Future
Often times a short-term setback can actually lead to a positive outcome in the long-term. The issue with attempting to label events in our life as good or bad is that we just don’t know what the second-order effects will be. Hypothetically, if we did know, we could reverse-engineer our lives to choose the absolute perfect actions based on our prediction of the outcomes they would yield. But life, by design, prevents this perfect future prediction.
It feels more peaceful to live life as an observer rather than a judge. Instead of “this good thing happened” or “this bad thing happened”, we could just say, “this happened”, and that removes the impossible burden of trying to figure out how to label our life experiences.
