Momentum

For the first 90 days of my freshman year in college, I went to the gym every single day. 90 out of 90 days. In that time, the net progress I made blew my mind. The first 10-20 days sucked; I felt like I wasn’t getting anywhere. But around day 30, I started to feel a spark. By day 50, I felt like I was getting exponentially stronger. I eventually missed a day (when I went home for Thanksgiving), but I kept the momentum going and within a year I was a totally different person.

Unfortunately, I did not maintain that same consistency all throughout college. In my last two years, I was much less active, and also less strict about my diet. But a month ago, I decided to go all in again. And I gained most of that strength back. There was no dramatic change – just an hour and a half a day, but everyday.

Not every workout is great. Most of them actually suck. But the progress is in the aggregate.

I’ve always loved to write, but I feel like I’m not great at it. To me, writing clearly is about thinking clearly, and I struggle to do the latter. But maybe I should take a lesson from myself and just write something everyday.

Most likely no one will read most of my posts. But that’s not the point. The point to me is to publicly show up, everyday. My hypothesis is that the first 10-20 days will suck, but hopefully around day 30 I start to feel a spark. And maybe by day 50, I might feel like my writing (and thinking) is getting exponentially clearer.
