Envy

Be careful of envy. If you see someone that has something you want (but don’t yet have yourself), your instinct may be to resent them for it. But consider the implications of that perspective. You resent this person for no other reason than them having what you want. As a result, what you want is an undesirable trait in your eyes. You may grow to hate what you initially wanted

As a child I used to envy people that could make friends easily. I looked different and talked different than everyone else, so I faced some natural barriers when connecting with new people . However, I noticed this unchecked envy creep up on me subconsciously, even once I grew up and had no trouble socializing anymore. I had associated making friends with a feeling of disgust because of the envy I projected onto others.

Another subtle yet pathological case is envy combined with success. If you envy rich people and start to hate them, what happens if you yourself become rich? Won’t you end up just hating yourself?
